Queen for the Republic

The British republican cause gained a surprise new benefactor this week - Charles Windsor. His decision to marry Camilla Parker-Bowles means that if he becomes King, she will be Queen. Many people who believe themselves to be royalists dislike this. She is somehow not popular enough to be Queen. Or perhaps its her looks, her status as a divorcee, or the fact that she isn't sainted bloody Diana that is the problem.

Anyone who believes themselves a royalist but also believes that Camilla shouldn't be Queen is missing the point. Believing in the royals means believing that people qualify for the job on a purely arbitrary basis. Who they are born to. Who they marry. The Queen is the woman married to the King. The King is the man whose father was King. No discussion, no protest, no veto.

The apparent public distaste for Queen Camilla should lead a few supporters of the current status quo to realise that the desire to choose our head of state necessitates a republic.
