Online Opinion

Two Years On
After two years in Iraq, what benefits has the American invasion brought? One hundred thousand dead Iraqis. Torture of detainees. A secular government replaced with an islamist one. Political divisions splintering along ethnic and religious lines. Rights of women, and minorities destroyed. Hunt for Osama bin Laden in a worse state than a year ago. World-wide terrorism as great a risk as before the war.
Supporters of the war have only one supposed benefit that the invasion of Iraq has led to - democracy in the Middle East. Presumably because a ground swell of popular protest is obviously caused by bombing a nearby country leads, rather than, say, the assassination of a popular local leader or decades of diplomatic pressure.
