Election Budget

In one speech Gordon Brown has done more for Labour's re-election chances than Alan Milburn has managed since taking on the job. Not to mention reminding everyone that when the question of Blair's successor comes to ahead, the central question remains 'If not Gordon, who?'

Beyond the election bribery, this was a dull, prudent budget. Big gestures are for manifestos and new parliaments, not the dying days before an election. Brown's genius here was to remind the waverers that he remains the best chancellor we've ever had, and the extent to which all Labour's successes have been down to Number 11, not 10.
