School Dinners
Jamie Oliver's School Dinners is one of the most depressing programs I've ever seen. Children being educated by our society to hate real food, with the constant justification of "giving them what they want". The health, behaviour, and development problems this causes should be obvious to everyone.
So what can be done?
Start young. Babies who are feed on home made food, learn to enjoy food, and their parents learn what they do and don't like. Babies who are feed on baby food bought from supermarkets, learn that food is bland and boring.
Ban all junk food advertising. Does anyone really believe that these companies spend millions on advertising to children without being convinced it works? The ban also needs to include media primarily targetted at adults - since this is the primary sector of influence for teenagers.
Ban all junk food from schools. School dinners can be interesting to kids without being full of fat and additives. Pizza, pasta, roast meat, and kebabs should all be no-brainers.
Teach cooking. Cooking real food can be quick, satisfying, cheap, and healthy. Re-heating ready meals costs more, saves little time, and the food is generally lacks taste and nutrition.
